24-year-old Derik Chandler was caught after assaulting Philip McCoy Jr while at a Walmart on Charlotte Pike on June 19th. On that day, McCoy, a Walmart loss prevention officer, reported to the police that he had seen Chandler and another man behaving erratically on camera. McCoy mentioned that he approached the two individuals and was on the phone with Walmart security to inform them of the situation. McCoy then noticed one of the men holding a laundry basket filled with health and beauty products worth $200. While McCoy was still on the phone, one of the individuals approached McCoy and hit him on the head, causing injuries. Chandler and the other individual then fled through an emergency door without returning the stolen items.

On August 11th, McCoy called the police again after noticing the same individuals inside Walmart. The officers arrived and detained Chandler, then watched video footage from McCoy that showed the June 19th assault. Officers determined the footage showed Chandler as the one who assaulted McCoy. Chandler was then taken into custody for assault and theft on August 12th.
