33-year-old Garth Lee Wood tried to purchase a car with a fraudulent check at the Rosa L Parks Boulevard Honda Dealership on June 13th. When officers arrived, they spoke with Wood, who stated he was a “Sovereign Citizen” with a “personal bank.” The “Sovereign Citizen” movement is a large anti-government extremist movement whose members believe that courts have no jurisdiction over people. Wood told police he wanted to purchase a vehicle, but Honda employees denied it because his check did not appear real. When police reviewed the check, they noticed it was of “unique quality.” The check had a misspelled address that was not associated with any banks and was written for a total amount of $50,000 made out to Honda Dealership. Kevin Carter, an employee at the establishment, told officers that Wood was confronted about the check. In response, Wood told the employee to “take half of it, just help me out, please.” Wood was then taken into custody for attempted criminal simulation.
